Fastest time and heavy crash for Massa
04 July 2008 / Results / PhotosFelipe Massa did not only set the fastest lap at Silverstone on Friday morning, the Brazilian also crashed heavily into the tyre barriers at Stowe. Massa was able to get out of the car on his own and was doing fine fortunately.
The British Grand Prix, home to most Formula 1 teams, got under way at 10.00am at Silverstone. The first half an hour was a quiet session as most drivers only completed an installation run. Last week every team completed a three-day test at the British track and already gathered a lot of data for Sunday's race.
After 45 minutes into the session Felipe Massa came out for his first timed lap and was immediately well on the pace. The Ferrari driver continued to improve his fastest lap time but then spun his car on oil. Alonso blew up his Renault engines just a few minutes before and had to park his car at the side of the track but left a lot of oil on the racing line. Massa spun off and crashed into the tyre barriers at Stowe causing a red flag.
The session was stopped for almost 20 minutes.
The second free practice session will get under way at 14.00.
